Around the Web

6 11 2012

Here are some possible useful things I have found recently on the web:

Piktochart allows you to create infographics using templates. Ranges from free to paid version.(video link)

Need a portfolio? Check out Pathbrite. Pathbrite helps individuals collect, track, and share a lifetime of achievements.(Instructional video below)Thanks to wanderingnoah on Twitter for the find.

Going to teach some doodling or Zentangles? Here’s an online workshop for Zendoodles.

Finally, the Art of Education blog has a post of “How to use Google Forms in the Art Room.” If you are new to this, you may find the post useful. I’ve added the video below.

Summer Webspotting

8 08 2012

Here’s some interesting stuff I’ve found/gathered over the summer whilst surfing the web. You will have to forgive me here, as hardly any of the content is connected. Simply a smorgasbord of good stuff.

1. Have several images to host on your site? Hongkiat ‘have put together a showcase of the best 10 galleries, slideshows and sliders they know of. They are all available for free, making them the perfect addition to position your website well for optimized browser and mobile viewing.’

2. If you do any portrait/life drawing, check out the examples on Carla Sonheim’s blog for drawing with a graphite stick.

3. If you love old ad imagery, have a look at The Bart&Co. Historic Clip Art Collection” on Flickr.

4. Comic or graphic novel artist? Download the beta version of MotionArtist until January 2013.

5. Love the old sound of a typewriter? Download Noisy Typer for your Mac here.

6. Finally, if you haven’t checked out PBS’ webseries OffBook yet, you have been missing a great show. Their most recent episode is embedded below, but also check out their last one on the art of logo design.

If you haven’t caught on to Flavors.me to hub your online content, you may be interested in about.me. With this, you may build your personal profile page that points users to your content from around the web. Watch the video below for more info.

Photo Sharing with DropMocks

20 01 2011

drop mocks thumb

I must say, DropMocks is sure a simple way to share photos quickly. I simply saved the photos to my desktop and dragged them into the DropMocks window, which is pictured above. Simple. I haven’t even registered for it. Apart from that, there’s not much else I know about their features. It is however really useful and all you need to do is share the URL. Click here to see an example I used to send to my coworkers as we build a collage unit.

Grids with Accurasee

2 01 2011

If you need grids to help you draw accurately, you may be interested in the free app Accurasee. It’s rather simple and there is a short tutorial video below. You can download the Mac/PC version for free here. There is also a version for the iPhone.

Curiosities & Roadside Attractions

19 11 2010

A few interesting tidbits I have recently found:

MusicMyne: Produce and remix your own version of given songs. This looks interesting but the navigation may take you a while.

Qwiki: A New Kind of Information Experience (via Appstorm) “Qwiki’s goal is to forever improve the way people experience information. Qwiki offers a brand new way to consume information: text, audio, video, and images fused together in a gorgeous and streamlined interface. The final search results will look more like a slideshow or a movie reel with all the relevant information related to the keyword you have searched for.”

DragOnTape

23 09 2010

dragontape thumbDragOnTape (currently in beta) is a cool little website that allows you to make video mix-tapes (playlists). You could use it to stream all your favourite YouTube videos or create that great Metal Mix for that video party you are throwing! This could also be a useful resource if you have a TV/Monitor in the lobby of your school to showcase curriculum videos or student work etc. I’ve embedded a  basic demo video below that has some text instructions. A cool feature I like is how you can share the playlist via a web link. So, I gotta get back to that Metal Mix (click me)!

(Note: At times, there are a few glitches. Since they are in beta, keep your eyes posted to the site.)

Apps (& sites) for your new Macbook Pro

16 08 2010

Well, my summer holidays are officially over and they weren’t as adventurous as this, but at school I received my new Macbook Pro and have been transferring/downloading apps to it. I previously blogged about Little Apps & Tools I Can’t Live Without back in October 2009 and I recommend you check it out if you are new to Mac or want some ideas of tools to use, as I still stand behind that list.

Some others I would add to the list are:

CoolIris: a browser plug-in that revolutionizes how you find, view, and share photos and videos. Whether you’re browsing the Web or your desktop, Cooliris presents media on an infinite “3D wall” that lets you enjoy content without clicking page to page. Download.

NameChanger: A must! Rename multiple JPG/Video files in 1 go. I have blogged about it before here (with video tutorial). (Mac only)

Flip4Mac: Flip4Mac WMV Components allow you to import, export and play Windows Media video and audio files on your Mac (though, you probably will rarely do that).

Norrkross MorphX: Not essential but I enjoy morphing photos together through a transition. Check out Norrkross Movie as well.

Panorama Maker 5: Stitch your photos together the easy way. It’s 80USD but the free trial version is good enough for posting on the web. I blogged about it before here.

Tooble/KeepVid: Download videos from YouTube etc. just in case your school’s internet is slow or gasp, blocked.

And don’t forget, you can now also do screencasts with Quicktime too (great for creating video tutorials of your computer screen).

Go here if you want a further essential list of free online tools. Lastly, install some useful widgets too.
