Free & Useful Apps (and yes they really are free!)

26 08 2008

Well, we are full swing into our school year. Let’s get straight into the good bits. Some good applications that you or students may find useful are:

GoogleDocs is a free online word-processor (spreadsheets too). Useful if you are on a budget or if your school has dual platforms. It also allows you to share and collaborate documents with others as well. You may upload and save to your desktop and share changes in real time.

Celtx is the world’s first all-in-one media pre-production software. It has everything you need to take your story from concept to production. Multi-Media FriendlyCeltx helps you pre-produce all types of media – film, video, documentary, theater, machinima, comics, advertising, gaming, music video, radio, podcasts, videocasts, and however else you choose to tell your story. For Windows, Mac OSX & Linux.

Picknik makes your photos fabulous with easy to use yet powerful editing tools. Tweak to your heart’s content, then get creative with oodles of effects, fonts, shapes, and frames. It’s fast, easy, and fun. Free! No registration required. Works on Mac, Windows, and Linux. No download required, nothing to install.

Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Useful for recording dialogue (or if you do not have GarageBand).

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 converter, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows. What does this mean? Convert your DVDs!

I am assuming everyone knows about VLC but I should also plug that too. This media player plays almost all formats! You may also be interested in SuTree for ‘how to’ videos (instead of YouTube or TeacherTube).

Also, scroll down this page and check the ‘BlogRoll.’ I have finally added other blogs that are quite informative and which I regularly read. In unrelated news, I have also provided a link to my online digital portfolio in the ‘About’ page (plug! plug!) using Digication. Enjoy!

ps. can’t believe I forgot this one! Thanks to staff at work for reminding me.

Tooble: Find any video on YouTube. Download to your computer with one click. Watch anywhere at any time. Free. (mp4 format)
